A career in civil engineering beckoned and Richard is now the Traffic Control Centre Operations Manager with Nottingham City Council. You might think that civil engineering and art have little common ground but there were many opportunities for Richard to continue producing artwork – artistic impressions and concepts of schemes were needed and Richard grabbed the opportunity to use his artistic ability at work. His colleagues were impressed with his talent and word soon got round that if you wanted a drawing of something, Richard was your man!
If something amusing happened in the office, shortly afterwards a cartoon (signed Chumley) would appear on the wall with caricatures of the people involved. The market has since expanded and Richard now uses much of his spare time to complete commissions for leaving cards, Christmas cards and publicity material, not to mention private commissions for portraits and many other subjects. You know when you’ve been Chumley’d!
Cartoons and caricatures are still very popular but pointillism is still one of Richard’s favourite disciplines. The downside is the time it takes to produce each piece but the results are worth every hour at the drawing board, as you can see from the examples on this site.
Richard is an accomplished coloured pencil artist — often teaching the art to budding artists in workshops, has appeared at the Art Materials Live Show at the National Exhibition Centre with the UK Coloured Pencil Society several times and won the first David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Wildlife Artist of the Year 2008.
Richard is now using a Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet to complete his cartoons and scenic artwork, often using the iPad too with the Brushes Application, but is now undertaking illustrative commissions so look out for them soon.
Thanks for looking and remember to check back to see what I get up to soon.
