‘Becks’

‘Buffy’

‘Buffy’ and ‘Becks’

I’d wanted to draw my beloved cats for some time but decided against my usual pen and ink pointillism. This would have taken many, many hours and hundreds of thousands of dots.

Although the finished effect is worth the time it takes to achieve, I wanted to use color instead which would bring out the beauty and

mischievous characters of my two

feline friends.

I had used coloured pencils many times in cartoon commissions, but decided to use a pure coloured pencil technique with these feline

portraits. This was something completely new to me and I was inspired by the awesome work of artists from the UK Coloured Pencil Society. I visited several of the artists’ web sites and saw the amazing effects that can be achieved with coloured pencils. I asked some of the artists for advice and their generosity and helpful comments were really useful in getting started. You can view these drawings and other great works at www.ukcps.co.uk

I wanted to use the best materials I could afford, so I bought some Karisma coloured pencils and ordered Rising Stonehenge paper from America. After taking plenty of photographs of the cats, I worked on colour swatches to get the effect of fur, and then finished the drawings some time later.

Buffy was finished first taking 17 hours to

complete, and then Becks took 25 hours.
