At Chowns Mill Roundabout the A45 is crossed by the A6. In addition the roundabout provides access into Higham Ferrers and Rushden. The high volume of turning movements combined with a lack of space on the roundabout result in severe congestion on the approaches at peak times. This results in frequent collisions. Highway England's plan is to improve the roundabout to address the existing congestion and safety issues while also providing future capacity to support planned growth in the local area. The aims of this scheme are to alleviate existing congestion, improve safety and provide better pedestrian facilities at the junction while minimising effects on the local environment and community.
The Kier Group commissioned me to undertake the illustrations for this £22M project and it's been a challenge to say the least, twisting and turning all the way. The 3D design in MXROAD was imported into SketchUp and rendered in Lumion Pro software. See the 2D illustration stills of the project below together with the huge SketchUp 3D model build shots. I had to paint skylines in using Google earth and Photoshop trickery. All in all, over 270 hours work on this but it's been great so thanks to the team at Kier Highways. The animation and adding moving vehicles to the signals sequence really bring this project to life and will be great for the public consultation with residents.
